INTERNATIONAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES

Chairperson:  Curt A. Reppuhn

World Community Service

Rotarians  answered the call for help at a medical and school mission near San Juan de la Managua, Dominican Republic, after a hurricane devastated the area in 1999.  Since then, the Rotary Club of Gaylord adopted this mission as a World Service Project area to meet and strengthen the goals of Rotary.  Each year, a group of Rotarians, other interested community members and high school / college students dedicate a week to making the lives of those less fortunate better.  Over the ensuing 9 years, the Rotary Club of Gaylord has

  • cleaned, repaired, rebuilt and/or expanded the electrical system, building foundation, grounds and sanitation building for the mission, medical clinic and school.
  • provided a Coulter hematological blood lab for the medical clinic and 10 microscopes for the school’s biology lab, funded largely in part by a $16,000 grant from the Rotary Foundation.
  • provided a grant of $4,000 to the RC San Juan de la Maguana for the purchase of hearing aids for hearing impaired children (funded by RC Gaylord and Petoskey, District 6290 and donations from RC Rotarian members).
  • Provided 30 bio-sand water filters to the community of El Rosario, Dominican Republic.
  • Provided emergency medical services for a cesarean birth and other medical treatments in the barrios (performed by the doctors that went with our group).
Long-Term Inbound Exchange Students

The Rotary Club of Gaylord has sponsored numerous long-term inbound exchange students over the years. Our 2006 - 2007 long-term inbound exchange students, Daniel Booysen and Fabio Pinhalves, are from South Africa and Brazil
